Purpose of the Role
The Shop Manager is responsible for leading daily maintenance operations on the shop floor while actively participating in aircraft maintenance, quality oversight, and technician development. This role is highly visible and hands-on, balancing leadership responsibilities with direct floor involvement.
The Shop Manager works closely with Maintenance Control and Maintenance Management to establish priorities, manage workflow, and ensure alignment between planning, execution, and aircraft availability.
This role consistently reinforces proper maintenance procedures, safety practices, and documentation standards, and serves in a Quality Assurance support capacity, including routine floor inspections, observation of maintenance activities, and real-time reinforcement of approved data usage, sign-off discipline, and clear, accurate paperwork.
Approximately 50% of the role is expected to be billable, achieved through quality oversight, troubleshooting, technician support, and direct hands-on maintenance work.
The Shop Manager is a key driver of maintenance quality, safety culture, operational discipline, and professionalism, setting expectations through presence, example, and accountability.
The role may also include the opportunity to act as a Fleet Manager for assigned aircraft, providing continuity between planning, maintenance execution, and aircraft operational readiness.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide overall supervision of daily shop floor workflows, including scheduling, work assignment, and prioritization
- Work closely with Maintenance Control to align daily execution with aircraft status, planning priorities, and operational needs
- Maintain an active presence on the maintenance floor, working alongside technicians and billing time where appropriate
- Perform Quality Assurance support functions through routine floor inspections and observation of maintenance practices
- Reinforce proper maintenance procedures, safety measures, and use of approved data through direct coaching and correction
- Ensure maintenance documentation is complete, accurate, and professional, including proper sign-offs, clear discrepancy descriptions, and concise corrective action entries
- Ensure work orders are closed in a timely manner and reflect accurate labor, parts usage, and task completion
- Ensure billing accuracy by validating labor charges, parts, and supporting documentation prior to closeout
- Ensure all maintenance is performed in accordance with company manuals, FAA regulations, and internal procedures
- Utilize CAMP as the primary tool for maintenance planning, tracking, forecasting, and documentation
- Utilize Corridor as the company ERP system for managing work orders, labor, parts, and billing
- Utilize JetInsight to support forward planning and opportunistic scheduling of service checks and maintenance events
- Provide direct leadership and oversight of the detailing team, ensuring work quality, scheduling coordination, and alignment with maintenance activities
- Mentor and develop technicians using a hands-on, on-the-floor training approach
- Train technicians on company procedures, systems, quality expectations, and documentation standards
- Promote and model a positive, safety-minded culture focused on doing the job right the first time
- Identify trends, recurring issues, or breakdowns in process and escalate appropriately
- Support scheduled, unscheduled, and AOG maintenance activities
- Provide accurate labor estimates and operational input to Maintenance Planning
- Conduct Quarterly Conversations and Annual Performance Reviews
- Verify parts authenticity, documentation, and proper receiving practices
- Support off-site maintenance events as required
- Conduct hangar and facility inspections and coordinate corrective actions
- Track and support departmental KPIs related to quality, efficiency, safety, and productivity
- May act as Fleet Manager for assigned aircraft, supporting maintenance forecasting, event coordination, aircraft condition monitoring, and operational readiness
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Maintenance
Qualifications Required
Education & Experience
- FAA Airframe and Powerplant Certificate required
- Minimum 5 years of experience in Part 135 and/or Part 145 corporate jet maintenance operations
- Prior leadership experience as a Lead Technician, Supervisor, or similar role required
- Demonstrated hands-on experience supporting turbine-powered corporate aircraft
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong working knowledge of CAMP highly preferred, including maintenance planning, tracking, forecasting, and documentation
- Strong working knowledge of Corridor highly preferred for work order management, labor tracking, parts, and billing
- Ability to quickly learn and effectively utilize CAMP and Corridor if prior experience is limited
- Working knowledge of JetInsight preferred
- Ability to read, understand, and enforce company manuals, FAA regulations, Ops Specs, and maintenance manuals
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with an emphasis on clear, concise, and accurate maintenance documentation
- Ability to mentor, train, and hold technicians accountable through direct, hands-on involvement
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, etc.)
- Ability to balance leadership responsibilities with hands-on technical work
- Scheduling flexibility to support overtime, AOG events, and unscheduled maintenance
- Ability to travel occasionally for off-site maintenance oversight
